Conservation of the relics of the Sun Temple is as important as its intangible heritage. Other than few researchers very few people know that…
- (1) some of the great Vedic philosophies were presented in the language of stone in this temple.
- (2) king Narasinghadev-I had created this temple to foster religious harmony in the society; torn then in Shaiva – Vaishnava rift. Both these are of intangible nature but valid still in the contemporary world and therefore deserve to be preserved in a new form.
Preservation of the existing ruins is of tangible nature which stand badly neglected. Shri Anil Dey, a great expert on Konark is agitating over both issues for over a decade. He is ready to present its findings on the badly neglected remains, if a meeting is held.
On 13 March 2014 the then Secretary, Culture and Tourism held a meeting to discuss the Global Sun Temple project. A concept paper with a tentative estimate was presented in the meeting.
Minutes of the meeting were communicated on 11.4.14 wherein a Detailed Project Report was requested. In response on 1.5.14 a D.P.R could be worked out only after availability of the land and study of a number of features – both technical and non-technical. We did not hear from the Government there after but it was learnt, the matter had gone up to the then Chief Minister and shelved.

I am attaching the chain of correspondence that took place then, for immediate reference. We hope the present Government – which lays great stress on heritage – may reopen the matter should you Sir, take an initiative.
In 2014 both Culture and Tourism were under one Secretary. The subject primarily belongs to Culture department and is therefore being addressed to the Culture Secretary.
Tourism being an important by-product, that department also could be involved but first a policy decision need be taken.
